Total power outage: diagnosis and restoration
A total power outage plunges your entire home into darkness. Unlike a partial outage, all circuits are affected. It is essential to quickly determine whether the problem originates from your installation or from the grid.
How to identify the source of the outage
- Grid outage (Enedis): your neighbours are also without power
- Internal outage: only your home is affected
- Power overrun: the main circuit breaker (AGCP) has tripped
- Insulation fault: the main RCD has tripped
Possible causes
- Faulty main circuit breaker: worn or damaged mechanism
- Serious insulation fault: significant current leakage on a circuit
- General overload: total consumption exceeds the subscribed power rating
- Upstream problem: damaged supply cable
- Grid outage: Enedis intervention or distribution network failure
Our intervention
- Check of the main circuit breaker and meter
- Testing RCDs and sub-circuit breakers
- Insulation measurement circuit by circuit
- Identification and repair of the fault
- Safe restoration of power to the installation
- Recommendations to prevent recurrence
What to do in case of a total outage
- Check whether your neighbours have also lost power
- Try to re-arm the main circuit breaker once only
- If the circuit breaker refuses to reset, do not force it
- Unplug high-power appliances before resetting
- Call an electrician if the problem persists
Prevention
- Adjust your subscribed power rating to your actual consumption
- Have your main circuit breaker checked regularly
- Test your RCDs every month
- Schedule a full diagnostic of your installation every 10 years
