Understanding satellite signal loss
Signal loss on a satellite dish can be total (black screen) or partial (some channels or transponders). Identifying the exact nature of the fault enables faster and more effective intervention.
Symptoms
- Black screen with the message "no signal" or "searching for signal"
- "Weak signal" message with a signal gauge at zero or very low
- Pixelated picture with artefacts and blocking
- Some channels missing while others continue to work
- Signal loss only in heavy rain (rain fade)
Possible causes
Misaligned dish
Wind, an impact or loosened fixings can shift the dish by a few degrees. In satellite reception, a deviation of 1 to 2 degrees is sufficient to lose the signal entirely.
Faulty LNB
The LNB (Low Noise Block) is the electronic component at the end of the dish arm. It is permanently exposed to the elements and can fail due to:
- A power surge during a storm
- Water ingress into the casing
- Natural wear after several years
Faulty coaxial cable
- Damage caused by works or rodents
- Water ingress into the cable or connectors
- Oxidation of the F connectors
- Cable crushed or kinked too sharply
Receiver problem
- Defective firmware update
- Expired or incorrectly inserted access card
- Incorrect DiSEqC configuration (for multi-satellite setups)
External cause
- New obstacle between the dish and the satellite (grown tree, new construction)
- Solar disturbance (sun-satellite conjunction - rare and temporary)

Repair
Depending on the identified cause, we carry out:
- Precise re-alignment of the dish with a field strength meter
- LNB replacement
- Repair or replacement of the coaxial cable
- Replacement of oxidised connectors
- Receiver reconfiguration
Prevention
- Install a coaxial surge arrester to protect the LNB from power surges
- Weatherproof all external F connectors (self-amalgamating tape)
- Check dish fixings once a year
- Opt for a dish size larger than the minimum to provide a signal margin
