Why align your Yagi aerial?
Incorrect aerial alignment is the most common cause of DTT reception problems. Even a deviation of a few degrees can result in a significant loss of signal and picture disturbances.
Signs of poor alignment
- Pixelated or frozen picture intermittently
- Black screen on some channels while others work
- "No signal" message displayed by the television
- Weather-related interference: rain, wind, storms
- Loss of channels after a storm or roof work
Causes of misalignment
Several factors can explain why an aerial drifts out of alignment over time:
- Strong winds: the Mistral and Mediterranean storms exert considerable forces on a mast at height
- Nearby construction: cranes, new buildings blocking the signal
- Worn fixings: corrosion of clamps and screws
- DTT transmitter changes: frequency or power adjustments
Our alignment service
Diagnosis with a field strength meter
We use a professional field strength meter to analyse signal quality with precision. This instrument allows us to:
- Measure the signal level in dBµV
- Check the bit error rate (BER)
- Identify any interference
- Compare available transmitters
Aerial realignment
The technician realigns the aerial to the exact degree towards the optimum transmitter, monitoring measurements in real time. Where necessary, we also carry out:
- Replacement of the mast or worn fixings
- Installation or replacement of the amplifier
- Inspection of the coaxial cable (connectors, cable condition)
Preventing future misalignment
- Have your aerial fixings checked once a year
- After every storm, visually check that the aerial has not moved
- Use a robust mast and guy wires in exposed areas
- Prefer stainless steel clamps to prevent corrosion
